Beautiful Sculpture will rise in slum where he filmed music video.

Rio de Janeiro (EFE).- The governor of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro announced Friday that he is going to erect a statue in tribute to the late singer Michael Jackson in the Rio slum where he filmed a music video in 1996.

“We’re going to honor Michael Jackson, an idol of my generation, with a space in Dona Marta. We’re going to put a likeness of Michael Jackson there, a beautiful sculpture to recall his time in Rio,” Gov. Sergio Cabral said during a speech the day after the superstar’s death from an apparent heart attack.



Jackson chose the “favela” or shantytown of Dona Marta to shoot some scenes of the video for his song “They Don’t Care About Us,” in which the Brazilian percussion ensemble Olodum also took part.



At that time, Dona Marta was dominated by a gang of drug traffickers that guaranteed the artist’s safety during the shooting in exchange for a large sum of money, a deal that sparked controversy in Brazil.



Police have now expelled the drug traffickers from Dona Marta and use the poor neighborhood for a pioneer security project combined with an extension of social services.



The Rio state government uses the slum as a “laboratory” and is providing all kinds of services, such as free wireless access to the Internet.
